While some maintenance issues are noted, the housekeeper's helpfulness and the property's charm contribute to enjoyable stays.

About this property

Lochmaddy 16 miles. St Kilda is a detached cottage situated on a working croft farm in a rural location on the magical Isle of North Uist. The cottage has bright and spacious accommodation which is mostly set across the ground floor. There is a country-style farmhouse kitchen which is very well-equipped with an American-style fridge/freezer, range oven for preparing delicious home-cooked meals and laundry facilities. There is also a dining area in this room. The comfortable and spacious sitting room has an impressive fireplace housing an open peat fire for those evenings indoors after a long walk out and about with a relaxing glass of wine. The three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin room are also on the ground floor along with a bathroom. On the first floor you will find a large family/dining room which has an extensive library of sporting and fishing books and board games along with a Smart TV and a leather sofa to relax in whilst either reading a good book or watching your favourite TV program, a Star Gazer telescope and Velux windows which provide fantastic views across the Balranald RSBP nature reserve and lochs with duns and ancient archaeological sites. The cottage is set within 10-acres of grounds with views of open farmland, hills and the sea while St Kilda Island is clearly visible in the distance. Situated just 3/4 of a mile from a series of sweeping horseshoe-shaped white coral sandy bays, this is a fabulous location. Tigharry natural arch and blowhole rock formation is less than two miles away from the property. With a mostly flat landscape, North Uist offers thousands of lochs with an excellent fishing loch being just 300 yards from the property, this is the perfect location for fishing enthusiasts. Asknerish (an old Tom Morris) Golf Course is open all year round and is only a 1 hour drive from the property. A few other great activities you can enjoy whilst on your holiday include St Kilda cruises, bird watching and salmon/sea trout fishing. St Kilda is the ideal choice for a rural and relaxing retreat in an untouched location.

The village of Lochmaddy is the terminus for the daily ferry linking it to Uig on the Isle of Skye and it is also the main centre of population for the island of North Uist. Lochmaddy has good facilities and services including a selection of hotels serving fresh local produce in their dining rooms. A visit to the award-winning museum and arts centre located in the centre of Lochmaddy is a must, and there is also a tourist office full of information about local events and places to visit. The road south of Lochmaddy will lead you to the village of Carinish some 10 miles away and if you continue on this road you can cross the causeway to the island of Benbecula. The town of Balivanich in Benbecula offers shops, post office, a bank, restaurant, a petrol station and an airport, from which car hire can be arranged. The causeway from Benbecula then leads onward to the island of South Uist.

Kilda. The location is fantastic for all the best best beaches on North Uist. Hosta beach (just over a mile away) is beautiful, wild and remote! There is lots of wildlife to see in the area-birds and sealife. The cottage is warm, comfortable and homely. it is really well equipped, We were warm and comfortable during some very stormy weather last week. Our kids loved the large upstairs room for star gazing, watching films and boardgames. St. Kilda has clearly been in the owners family for a long time and is well loved. There are no bi-fold doors or designer features but that makes it in this beautiful landscape.

Very spacious and well equipped house with great views and a large garden for our dog. The upstairs lounge area was super for relaxing after days out and the spa bath was also much appreciated. A problem with the downstairs shower was rectified quickly by the homeowner.

House very run down & hugely overpriced. Every room needs fresh decor, bedding mismatched, faded & bobbling. Hot water temperamental regularly going cold mid shower. Shower head fell from ceiling during our stay. We booked this property because I’m on waiting list for a hip replacement but we had no shower downstairs for 2nd week & the toilet seat was loose. Gas leak in kitchen - pipe had to be replaced by engineer during our stay. Kitchen table/chairs unsteady. One chair collapsed beneath my son. Broken step at back door. Roof guttering down & lying in garden. No drawers in twin room, broken drawers in double room. Spice rack in kitchen dates back to 2011 - average Use by date for spices is 2014. No cupboard space in kitchen. Wine glasses full of dust. Dog hair everywhere including cutlery drawer & upstairs. Metal electricity point in kitchen does not comply with today’s regs. No PAT testing. I have taken photographs of all points mentioned.
