About this property

Brough 3 miles. An attractive, red sandstone detached cottage on the owner's upland sheep and cattle farm in the hamlet of Flitholme, a short drive from Appleby-in-Westmorland. Situated in open countryside, with glorious views over the Pennine hills, the area is ideal for walking, cycling and exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District National Parks. Traditionally furnished with a homely feel, the cottage has an open plan living area with characterful beams and a cosy woodburning stove set in a feature stone fireplace. The small rear garden is accessed via the conservatory and the perfect spot to relax in the sunshine and plan your day. The surrounding area is a walker’s heaven, with numerous trails and footpaths straight from the door and cyclists will enjoy the challenging terrain. Just three miles away, the village of Brough caters for everyday needs, with a market square, castle ruins and selection of pubs and shops, while nearby Appleby is picturesque and offers riverside walks, independent shops and is known for its annual horse fair. Guests will enjoy driving through beautiful scenery to visit the Bowes Museum with its stunning exhibits, or take a trip up the Tees Valley to High Force and Cauldron Snout waterfalls. Alternatively, drive twenty miles south to Wensleydale and visit the creamery and water mill in Hawes. A superbly placed cottage to explore the upland fells of England.

Furthermore Elm cottage is placed exactly between the major tourist area's (Lakes/Pennines/Dales/Bowland) so you have a lot of choice to make daytrips. We loved to sit in the little conservortary after our daytrip, even on a cool day you can sit outside.

Our hosts were very helpful in enabling us to get the best of the local walks and nearby towns and villages etc. This is a very comfortable cottage with a useful enclosed rear garden which our dog thoroughly enjoyed. Would recommend this cottage for anyone wanting to walk the Cumbrian fells and who likes a degree of comfort when they return back to base. In sum, an excellent cottage with kind hosts and one which we would wish to return again to in the near future.
