About this property

Ballydehob 4.4 miles. This quaint, one bedroom apartment sits in a rural location next to the owner’s farm, a few miles from the village of Ballydehob in County Cork. Attached to the owner’s home, The West Wing is a delightful little bolthole for couples looking to escape everyday life and explore this region of County Cork. Furnished in a characteristic and homely style, this splendid apartment features a welcoming open-plan living space; rustle up a feast in the kitchen before settling down on the sofa, tuning into the TV whilst you catch up on your favourite shows. The second sitting room provides a further relaxation space boasting a charming woodburning stove which is sure to be appreciated in the winter months. As you look to catch some rest, head upstairs to the bedroom, and tuck yourself within the double bedroom. The bathroom comes with bath and shower over, so you can best decide how to prepare for the day. The jewel in this Ballydehob apartment is most definitely the delightful grounds that surround it. Enjoy a moment on the decking with a refreshing beverage in hand, or wander around the grounds and take a look at the running’s of the owner’s farm. Take a short drive into Ballydehob, an artistic village called home by several famous writers and sculptors, offering a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafés to sample. Take to the waves on one of the fishing excursions or sightseeing tours, or simply relax and enjoy the sound of the sea at one of the many lovely beaches that dot the coastline, while Derreennatra Pier is close by and offers spots to moor a boat or go swimming. Those looking to get their steps in can ramble the scenic routes around Mizen Head or the nearby Sheep’s Head Peninsula before resting at a friendly local tavern where you can refresh yourself with a pint and listen to a spot of traditional Irish music! If exploration takes you further afield, the towns of Skibbereen and Bantry offer a wide range of amenities and there are several beautiful villages dotted along the coastline surrounding The West Wing, making it a superb base for your next Irish getaway.

The village of Abbey is situated 7 miles west of Portumna and 11 miles from Loughrea, south east of Galway city on the northern shore of Lough Rea. County Galway’s winner, for three years running, of Ireland’s Tidy Towns competition, the village of Abbey offers two pubs and a supermarket, and a monastery dating back to the 11th Century, from which the village takes its name. Portumna is nearby, offering good fishing and watersports, while the medieval town of Loughrea is host to several shops and pubs, two 4 star hotels, an 18 hole golf course and a lake, renowned for its fishing. Gort, is a medium sized market town on the Galway-to-Ennis Road, situated in a gap between the Slieve Aughty Mountains and the Burren to the south. There is a strong tradition of Irish music in the locality and many pubs stage sessions at night. With the cosmopolitan delights of Galway city and the popular beach at Salthill also within driving distance, this is an ideal touring base.

House needs a good painting. Paint on window frames all peeling off. Windows are filthy and covered in cobwebs with dead insects. Inside of windows covered in cobwebs and dead insects also. Some windows don't open at all and others don't close properly. Had to clean the fridge as there is no door on the icebox compartment so keeps defrosting and food in corners. Couldn't use toaster as covered in grease and dirt. There's a balcony but no furniture to sit on. There's an ironing board but no iron. There's a washing machine but nowhere to dry clothes ie no washing line, clothes horse or dryer. The worst part is every night all these little centipede type insects keep coming out of the cracks and holes in the ceiling and walls in the bedroom and bathroom. We were killing on average about 12 to 15 each night. It was horrendous. Had to check all the nooks and crannies and kill them before going to bed. The bedroom has 2 windows one has a lace curtain and the other has a dirty curtain. There are 2 ledges and beams in the bedroom and they had loads of cobwebs and dead insects. We spent the first few hours hoovering and cleaning. Not what we planned for our holiday. It was the worst house I have ever stayed in and would not recommend it to anyone. The only plusses are the location. Set in the countryside on a working farm. Very handy for touring Sheepshead and Mizen peninsulas. The description on Hogans cottages is nothing like the reality. There is no downstairs bedroom as advertised and no bath. If you don't like cats be aware that there are 3 pet cats wandering around the property. Never again.

Pretty, peaceful, perfect. We loved our time here in the welcoming, relaxed rural setting and can't wait to return. All the best to Hugh and his family.

Excellent communication and always there if we had a question. Lovely accommodation, bedroom is upstairs and bathroom downstairs which is worth noting if you’ve a disability. Accommodation was really lovely and clean. Great local walks and very quiet environment. We’d love to stay again.
